LAS 100
THE METHOD OF SOCIAL SCIENCE

A Learning Cluster course linked to Gangs and the Media

Teaching Assistant: Erika Rodriguez
English Instructor: Todd Sherfinksi

This class is a companion to CrJ 102. The main product of the class will be
a 3-5 page researchproposal written by each student on investigating how th
e tearing down of the housing projects and/or gentrification effect Chicago gangs.

The student must develop an hypothesis on what effect the re-division of space in
Chicago is having on gangs. Then s/he must choose a method of investigating the topic.
Since this is a proposal and notan actual study, no actual research will be conducted.
However, pilot interviews with gang members, police, CHA, or community leaders, a
brief overview of data, like changes in rates of violence or arrests,or a review of gang
literature or media reports will strengthen the proposal.

Especially important for papers which include “human subjects” — the research term for
real live peoplewho are observed or interviewed — will be explaining in the proposal how
“human subjects” will be protected. Grades will be based on classroom participation,
actuallyreading the assignments, and the quality of the final paper. Some students
may be asked to present their papers to a mock panel for funding. The top proposal
will receive an award (to be determined).
