The Police Officer's Most Dangerous Enemy?
Him or Her Self!

In Chicago, police are more likely to klll themselves than be killed by others. Every two years,
on average, 3 police officers are killed in Chicago. In the same period 4 or 5 officers will take
their own lives. In an average year, Chicago police kill about 13 civilians and are involved in 50
shootings of suspects.

Nationally, the deadliest year in law enforcement history was 1974 when 271 officers were killed.

The deadliest decade was the 1970's when a total of 2,240 officers died, or 224 each year.

That figure dropped dramatically in the 1990's, to 157 per year.
