There are 29 State Prisons in Illinois containing over 44.000 Inmates.
Including juvenile and special institutions, there are over 75,000 prisoners
in State custody.The famous prison at Stateville is just south of Chicago
in Joliet, while the super-max Tamms prison is at the southern tip of
the state. Dwight is the main prison for women, located about an hour
south of Chicago.
Cook County Jail has an average daily census of more than 10,000.
There are also two major federal facilities at Marion and Pekin.
