Unlike New York City, homicide in Chicago has increased in the last forty years. While New York City's 2000 homicide rate was the same as its rate in 1965, Chicago's is more than twice as high.

But while homicide rates in Chicago have doubled, its geography has changed. Murder in Chicago is now more common in the far western and southern areas of the city. Why?
