Gang Research
John Hagedorn

About Me

I’ve spent my adult life questioning “official definitions of reality” and organizing against injustice and war. "Research not Stereotypes," is the motto for my website. In the 1960s, I dropped out of college to participate in the civil rights and anti-war movements. I watched gangs form in Milwaukee in the 1980s and have been trying to understand how gangs and the “socially excluded” fit into a strategy for social change. I have been researching, writing, and teaching about gangs for more than 25 years. I also serve as an expert witness in gang court cases, many involving the death penalty. I am married, have five kids, three grandchildren, and two dogs.
