Vice Lords Disown "gang" label

I n a recent article, The Daily News said that our spokesman, Robert Gore, “criticized Mayor Richard J. Daley for not providing the Vice Lords with enough rakes, shovels, and other tools” for a beautification program administered by Conservative Vice Lords, Inc.

This is not true, in a written press statement, CVL, Inc., stated that “we are grateful to the Field Foundation and the Catholic School Board for giving us the opportunity to run our own program and improve our own community. We appreciate the support of Ald. Collins, and we appreciate the equipment we have received through Mayor Daley.

The co-operation and coordination of these several groups with CVL, Inc,, with no strings is an example of the kind of support we need.

We resent also your reference to the Conservative Vice Lords as a gang. We are not a gang; we are a corporation, nonprofit and legally constituted in the State of Illinois. Our program is self-help and our purpose is the development of social and economic freedom for black youth.

Unfortunately, the public prefers to remember us as we were rather than to accept us as we are.
