The Hawthorne Western Electric Company

Residents of Lawndale were employed in the thousands by the Western Electric Plant in Cicero, just over the city line from Lawndale.

This plant, as well as the Sears headquarters, closed in the 1970s dealing a crippling blow to Lawndale. Arson and deindustrialization helped devastate Chicago's west side.

Where is the work today for the people of Lawndale? Why should there be surprise that so many young men have turned to dealing drugs?
