2. The 1919 Race Riots

A Video History of Gangs in Chicago

2.The 1919 Race Riot - 25 minutes

The Race Riots of 1919 were gang related violence. The mainly Irish gangs, or Social Athletic Clubs, made terrorist raids into Bronzeville to keep black people "in their place." The result of the race riots was a lasting system of racial segregation that has shaped both everyday life as well as the nature of gangs. The Social Athletic Clubs "matured out" of local gangs and entered the world of politics. A different fate awaited black gangs, and, as next weeks video will show, the Italians took still another path.
